Go Hesjedal Go!

The kids and I, and to a lesser extent Mama, have been watching the Giro d’Italia each and every morning.

Aside from the fact that it’s a terrific three week, absolutely grueling bike race all over Italy, overshadowed in prestige only by the Tour de France, Ryder Hesjedal, from Victoria, BC, Canada was named Captain for team Garmin Barracuda for this race. He went into the race in hopes of doing well in the general classification. Of course, if you’ve ever followed cycling, and specifically the number of Canadians who have done well on the world stage, then you’ll know that we’ve been about as prominent as Nigerians in the NHL.

As a matter of fact, never once, in the 94 prior editions of the Giro has a Canadian ever worn the pink leader’s jersey. As a result, we are always hopeful, though never really expecting a Canadian to be in the lead.

Now, imagine our excitement when, a few days ago, Hesjedal actually took the overall lead in the race! The kids and I were jumping up and down, hooting and hollering, looking like crazy people.

Saarah developed a new way of cheering, involving her whole body, and it’s so terrific that I’ve adopted it as well. To perform “The Saarah” a person will, alternating left then right, pump their arms up and down as quickly as possible. The speed has to be such that your hips start shaking side to side. While all of this is going on, she’s shouting “GOOOOO HESJEDAL!”

While I’m certain that Saarah’s extreme enthusiasm towards a fellow Canadian doing exceptionally well on the year’s first Grand Tour, I believe she might be equally excited by the fact that the leader’s jersey is pink.

*While he was able to hold on to the lead for three days, Hesjedal lost the jersey yesterday, and is currently in second place, sitting a slim 17 seconds behind Joachim Rodriguez. Since the race is only half way through, there’s still plenty of time for him to get it back. Go Hesjedal Go!
