Secondhand Stories

While I was working over the weekend, Mamacita and the Stink-Generators(if we ever start a family band that’s what we’re going with. I’ve just decided, and I doubt anything more awesome could be created) decided it would be a good idea to spend the day at the beach. Who could blame them?! It warmed right up to a balmy 5 degrees, as opposed to the usual -15 that it has been for months on end.

DSC_1121(web)Now given the fact that I was preoccupied with the ridiculous notion that you can’t call in to work, claiming you can’t come in simply because the weather is nice and you’d much rather be out on your bike, I have no idea what actually transpired on the shores of the Northumberland Strait. I only know what I’m told, and a lot of the time I’m not told an awful lot(recently I asked what the kids did at school. They told me “nothing”. I later found out that they had taken a horse-drawn sleigh ride, and Saarah had been chosen to feed apples to the horse. That would’ve been pertinent information when I asked about their day).

DSC_1110(web)I’m told that they spent a great deal of time sliding on their bums down the ice that covered the hills. I was also told that they may be requiring new snow pants before next winter. They didn’t say it specifically, but I believe they were in training for the 2026 Winter Olympics in the sport of Luge. We live in a small town, and ice on a hill is as close to a proper sliding centre that we have. Heck, if the Jamaicans can put together a bobsled team, then I don’t see why this couldn’t be a step in the right direction. Why they didn’t take the sleds that were sitting in the trunk with them, I have no idea.

DSC_1119(web)Tevye found himself quite enamored with all that this half-chewed piece of wood could become. I’m told he toted it around for a good 20 minutes, covering one end with snow and then eating it(just the snow, not the wood). He was pretending it was a popsicle. I guess it was warmer that it has been, but it wasn’t exactly ice cream weather. He’s a strange boy.

DSC_1100(web)Saarah found some “winter flowers” that she was insistent that she schlep along with her. Of course they ended up back at home. If there’s one thing I was just thinking we don’t have enough of, it’s garbage. They didn’t stay inside very long before they found their way to the compost bin.

While I don’t have definitive proof, I’m given to understand that everyone involved had a lovely time at the beach.

Who says you can only enjoy a day at the beach in the middle of summer?
