Outfits By Saarah
The children, being the independent little souls that they are, enjoy being allowed to pick their own clothes. While this may have all sorts of wonderful, and positive effects on the psyche of preschoolers, it also has the propensity to produce some peculiar clothing combinations.
Tevye caught on quite quickly to which clothes look nice together, and, on the days that he’s given this freedom, you wouldn’t be able to discern that it was he who chose the day’s clothing. Some days I go into the shower, and he’s in his jammies, and by the time I come out, he’s fully dressed. Like those big buttons at Staples say “That was easy!”.
Now, when it comes to Saarah, I think we’re still in the learning process. She has a tendency to pick articles of clothing for their individual merits, rather than how the whole picture will look when completed. Approaching the art of getting dressed in such a fashion(get it? getting dressed… fashion? I almost had a gag there! Hmm, perhaps I’ve been watching too much Foghorn Leghorn) tends to produce an ensemble that I don’t believe I’ll be allowing to leave the house.
You might think that I could simply ask my three year old daughter to change her clothes, perhaps making a suggestion or two, in regards to her clothing choices. 
I mean, I’m not daft enough to suggest a complete overhaul, just a few tweaks here and there.
If that’s what you’re thinking, then you haven’t met Saarah. She is perhaps the most stubborn person on the entire planet. I sincerely wish that I could say that I was speaking in hyperbole, for the sake of effect. That is just simply not true.
This picture was the result of much pleading, whining, grovelling, and begging, and that was just from me! I merely asked her if I might take her picture(this is, after all, a girl who loves few things more than having her picture taken), and put it on my blog. I must have chased her around for 10 minutes, and this was the best one I could get.
So, what is the lovely Miss Saarah wearing? Well, she’s got a chunky sweater that is officially two sizes too small, over top of a printed shirt which is only one size too small. Then she’s also picked out her frilly pink tutu, and beneath all of that is a pair of sky blue tights. You’ll notice how this particular ensemble goes oh, so well with her clenched fists and her “Grump Pirate”(a term coined by my two delights) facial expression.
She has many clothes that fit, I can assure you. I don’t want to get a bunch of angry letters now, claiming that I’m not clothing my children properly.
I do my best, but sometimes they just don’t let me.

I do my best not to, which is why I generally let her dress as she pleases while we’re at home.

Please! I don’t mind at all.
I read a suggestion somewhere. It was to make a badge or pin-on button that says, “I dressed myself!” That way, the kids get to brag at how grown-up they are, and nobody thinks you picked out three clashing shades of hot pink.
That said, her outfit is honestly not that bad compared to some I’ve seen.
There are certainly worse configurations of clothing that she could have, and has, come up with.
I like the button idea! I told my wife about it. She reminded me of the story when her mother sent her with a note to school, advising her teacher that she had dressed herself.

I think my daughter couldn’t be trusted with a button, so maybe a necklace…
Also, I think you’ll appreciate this. When my son was 2, his preschool picture day was an unusually warm autumn day. Of course, he wanted to wear a sweater. It was supposed to be 82. I almost sent him to school in his birthday suit, but we finally found something he would consent to wearing under the sweater (so he could take the sweater off if it got hot). It was a t-shirt that said, “I’d rather be NAKED!!” In the end, I was glad for the sweater…
I think one simply does not ask ANY woman to change the clothes she picked out. haha! This fellow Canuck has just discovered your blog and I’m sharing it!

This was all very amusing! blog and comments both…I have to agree with the person who said this is a pretty tame child-picked outfit compared to some I have seen. I also have to agree that Grump Pirate is a pretty good term for how she looks in the photo hehe
Oh, I realize that this is pretty tame. I meant to include, though am only now realizing it, that this is far from the most ridiculous that she’s looked.
I love that face she’s pulling! If I were you, I’d start loving her tutu and thick sweater choices because I suspect you are really in for trouble when she is about 13….. 🙂
My little boy at 6 is more than capable of dressing himself, but the funny thing is that he will come out nudie and I’ll say, “Why aren’t you dressed yet?” and he’ll then say, “Because you haven’t put my clothes out for me yet!” He just doesn’t care what he wears at all….sigh….
That’s hilarious! Oh children and their love of being nude.
I’ve decided that on her 12th birthday she’s being shipped off to an all girls boarding school. She can come back when she’s 25. Either that, or she’s being locked in the basement, but I think that the authorities will have less issue with the boarding school idea.
This looks like something I would purposely put my kid in. Saarah is perfect.
I can assure you that she is FAR from perfect. She is, however, a sweet beem-bom.
I completely understand. This morning Kailynn (3) dressed herself for daycare, and after about 5 minutes I gave up trying to convince her to change, and instead just planned to explain that she dressed herself. Meanwhile I am getting calls from the elementary school because apparently some of my boys have recently forgotten to wear underwear and I am not properly performing morning inspections! LOL
Oh dear! There was a day a few weeks back when Saarah dressed herself, and it wasn’t until mid afternoon that I realized that she didn’t have any underwear on.
She was proud of the fact that she had dressed herself, but I, for some reason, didn’t think about the fact that she is too darn short to reach her underwear drawer. The tip-off should have been a lack of socks, however, it was not.
Oh my, I do love Saarah’s spunk!
My daughter is the same way. The other day she put on Alice in Wonderland knee-high schools. Over that, she put on Halloween pumpkin socks. And then brown buckle shoes. She said she thought it was the perfect outfit.
That’s pretty cute, in a ridiculous sort of little girl way.
